We are currently in a study on the disciples and discipleship on Sunday mornings. Last week we saw 5 disciples meet Christ for the first time (John 1:35-51). When the first two disciples, Andrew and John the Apostle, were pointed to Jesus by John the Baptist they followed Him (John 1:37). Christ turned around and asked them, “What do you seek?” (John 1:38).
People seek Jesus Christ/God for a variety of reasons:
- Some seek to kill Him (John 5:18; John 18 – soldiers in the garden) – He didn’t fit their system.
- Some seek Him to make their life easier (John 4:15 – the Woman at the well)
- Some seek Him for the bread He gives (John 6:26 – Feeding the 5000 – ate the bread and were filled)
- Some seek Him because of His amazing teaching (John 7:10-11 – philosophical interaction and debate).
- The only proper reason to seek Him is to find out who He is (John 1:39, 41) so that you may worship and serve Him (John 4:23-24).
What do you want with Jesus? Are you just fulfilling your tradition itch? Are you simply seeking some who can give you “Your Best Life Now”?, or are you willing to see Him as the Son of God and take up your cross and follow Him wherever He might lead (Luke 9:23-25)?
Your blog about “Why are you seeking God?” and the messages on discipleship have been very thought-provoking to say the least. Most of my life, I have sought Jesus for all of the “other” reasons, but my heart’s desire now is to find out who Jesus is and to follow HIM. Thank you for helping me to re-focus my attention on HIS person.
